Britain's best seaside destination

Dartmouth has been ranked second by consumer champion Which? in its annual poll of the UK’s best coastal destinations.

Which? asked thousands of holiday makers to rate their recent visits to over 100 UK seaside resorts across a range of factors including food and drink, seafront, beach, value for money and peace and quiet.

At the top the list was St Mawes in Cornwall scoring 85% with Dartmouth on 84%.

With Dartmouth’s cheery disposition, it little boats, marina, ancient buildings, plentiful pubs and tea rooms and rainbow-coloured houses that look down from Kingswear, we’re not at all surprised.

Dartmouth and the South Hams are perfect for families.

If you only get as far as the glorious River Dart, which runs for 47 miles from Dartmoor to Dartmouth, there’s so much to do.

Try stand up paddleboarding, kayaking or canoeing, or books cruise and spy on Agatha Christie’s house, an imposing building now owned by the National Trust.

Atlantic seals are always out and about along the River Dart, lazing on pontoons, sleeping on boats, or just popping their heads up to say hello.

Here are a few ideas of how to enjoy your time in Dartmouth.
